Who is this course suitable for?

The Edexcel Further Mathematics A-Level is designed for students who are:

  • Highly proficient in Mathematics: It’s aimed at students who have a very strong grasp of GCSE-level Mathematics and wish to extend their understanding to more complex concepts.
  • Aspiring to study Mathematics-related degrees: It is ideal for those planning to pursue university courses in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Economics, or any course that requires a high level of mathematical ability.
  • Enjoying mathematical challenges: This course is for those who find mathematics stimulating and are likely to enjoy exploring more advanced topics beyond the standard A-Level Mathematics syllabus.
  • Ready for increased workload: Further Mathematics is more demanding than standard Mathematics, requiring additional study time and effort.

Course structure, content and assessment

The specification requires students to sit two Pure Mathematics papers, each of 1.5 hours in length (75 each), plus two ‘option’ papers (1.5 hours, also 75 marks each), all taken at the end of Year 13.

Core Pure Mathematics:

Students must study Core Pure Mathematics 1 and 2. This covers topics such as Complex Numbers, Series, Matrices, whilst extending further the topics studied in A Level Maths such as Calculus, Proof and Vectors.

Students can choose from a range of optional topics in the second year, which may include:

Further Pure Mathematics

Advanced techniques in areas like matrices, differential equations, and further calculus.

Mechanics

More advanced topics in mechanics, including motion, forces, and energy.

Statistics

Further exploration of statistical methods, probability theory, and distributions.

Decision Mathematics

Focus on mathematical modelling, optimization problems, and algorithms
